Dear Editor,

H. Douglas Lightfoot’s letter is very timely (Tar sands no solution to energy needs, November 22, A6). He posits; “What will be the “new coal” to power the world? Certainly not tar sands!”

Alberta’s Pembina Institute launched a new website (www.oilsandswatch.org) on the oil sands on November 23. A report, slide show, and a video provide an indication of the scope of development there in the context of environmental issues. A sidebar indicates that nuclear reactors are being considered as a means of providing energy needed to extract and upgrade oil from the tar sands. Perhaps that will be the “new coal” Mr. Lightfoot is seeking.

Nuclear energy resources are available in sufficient quantity to provide the energy thriving humans and a healthy environment need long after oil, coal - and tar sand oil - become too precious to burn.

Yours truly,

Duane Pendergast
