Dear Editor:

“The prime minister’s office is furious with environmental groups who publicly opposed the government’s approach [on Kyoto] in hope of convincing Ottawa to take a harder line against the big polluters”. “Prime Minister Paul Martin’s senior officials are telling environmentalists they may have destroyed the best plan they could hope for”. (Herald, 05/03/31, A7)

Apparently a family feud has developed. The prime minister’s office is clearly just too close and cozy with environmental groups.

Hopefully, our government is finally coming to realize it has been far too attentive and gullible with respect to ill informed advice from Canada’s environmental organizations.  Environmentalists, with little knowledge and understanding of climate change and greenhouse gases, have used the concept of global warming to promote their many causes. They have convinced officials and the public that easy initiatives of energy efficiency, conservation and renewable energy will allow Canada to meet the Kyoto commitment coming due from 2008 to 2012. This will not do the job. It seems Canada has abandoned all feasible alternatives.

It is long past time to consider last resort damage control. Canada now needs to seriously study the Kyoto legal labyrinth to find the least cost way out.

Yours truly,

Duane Pendergast
