Dear Editor

Robert Matthews’s observations on the uncertainty of climate science and methodology to manage greenhouse gases are most astute. (“Killer Forests?”, 06/01/14, FP15)

However, his closing comments on the roles of climate scientists and politicians seems totally reversed from reality. He suggests climate scientists have “no doubt about the basics of global warming and the time for action is now” He then claims climate scientists are pressing politicians to take action “to do the impossible: “modify the huge, chaotic system that is the earth’s climate…”. He states:  “we are lucky that, for once, politicians do not share such delusions of omniscience”. Yeah! Sure!

Actually it is the other way around. Unelected politicians, within environmental organizations, have deliberately helped create the myth that “climate scientists” have no doubt about human caused global warming. Some politicians within governments are eager to make the most of that myth for reasons other than the preservation of the environment.  Together they have turned a serious issue for scientific investigation into a hysterical, unreasoned, unrestrained circus of speculation and inappropriate action.

Climate scientists, and other scientists and engineers, reveal real doubt about the causes of climate change and the possibility of developing methodology to control it. Environmental organizations and complicit governments are rushing to turn down the global thermostat. Wouldn’t we be wise to figure out how climate, and the thermostat, work before we start frantically and aimlessly twisting the dial?

Yours truly,

Duane Pendergast
