30 Fairmont Park Lane S The Herald’s headline; “Science should not be politicized” is a grand goal. It is unsuited to David Suzuki’s “Science Matters” column of February 12. Dr. Suzuki is Canada’s master of environmental politics. His gossipy column indicates that Dr. James E. Hansen, a prominent climate scientist, is being “silenced” by the United States government under the direction of George Bush. Nonsense! The Goddard Institute provides over 100 climate change papers Hansen has authored and co-authored. His website at Columbia University (www.columbia.edu/~jeh1/) includes a February 10, 2006, speech in which he urges action to manage greenhouse gases. Is Hansen silenced by the U.S. government? Hardly! The U.S. leads in supporting and conducting climate related studies and making them available for consideration by the public and politicians. There is an interesting development related to climate change. American evangelical Christian leaders have just published “Climate Change: An Evangelical Call to Action”. Combine that with the dogmatic climate change beliefs of environmental organizations, and James Lovelock’s mystical musings that a complex entity regulates earth’s atmosphere to support life, and we have the making of a new religious faith. Dare I call it Climatism? That is a holy alliance that George Bush and Stephen Harper should watch. Yours truly, Duane Pendergast
