Lane S Dear Editor, I like to see the National Post soldiering on to suggest science based reason be applied to climate change. (Editorial, “Baird can’t out-green Gore”, April 30). Most don’t care. Now that climate change has morphed into the world’s greatest multimedia reality-fantasy game there is not much call for science. Jennifer Ditchburn of Canadian Press brought this to a sharp focus on CTV’s “Question Period”. She wondered if Minister Baird had a chance in a debate with “sort of rock star type people like Al Gore and David Suzuki”. Well, maybe newcomer Baird does have a chance. Star Suzuki has placed an all-in bet on the Kyoto pot. That may end his play. Superstar Gore hedges with an apparent all-in wager, but is slyly siphoning bags of chips into his own pocket. Baird’s refusal to commit to Kyoto and bluffing action plan on climate change may keep him going. His feint to the left and appeal to his Canadian contingencies spirit of competition with foe Gore’s American base could buy vital audience support. In the meantime one thing seems sure. The science card may be an ace in the hole but this is not the time to play it.
Yours truly,
Duane Pendergast
