30 Fairmont Park Lane S Re: “Is there a case for nuclear power”Dear Editor, I wonder if the “smoke and mirrors” around the climate change debate is blinding Terence Corcoran’s vision of nuclear power. He indicates costs of nuclear power are increasing. He posits the only economic reason to consider it is to avoid the cost of some kind of carbon tax. Wrong Mr. Corcoran! The overwhelming rationale for considering nuclear power is that civilization will need the energy. The cost of all energy systems is going up in concert with concern over supplies of the fossil fuels most of us depend on for our very lives. Perhaps climate catastrophe is not in the cards. However we will see real shortages of energy at some time in the not too distant future. You, and I, are all right Mr. Corcoran, but younger generations might run into a wall. This is an eventuality humanity needs to keep in mind. Nuclear energy promises an essentially inexhaustible supply. Increasing relative costs of other systems will eventually favour abundant nuclear energy. Maybe it is time to invest in the future before we run out of the low cost energy wherewithal to accomplish the task. Yours truly,
Duane Pendergast
