Re: Slippery Situation, December 22
Chiquita Brands definitely writes with a forked pen on the topic of oil sands
usage. Their letter to ForestEthics uses the “tar sands” phrase seven times as
they vow to try to avoid oil from that source. One month later their letter to
Alberta Enterprise Group indicates “Chiquita is not boycotting or banning
Canadian oil”. Which is it?
However, Chiquita is not the prime mover in a breeding ball of slippery snakes
attacking Canadian interests. ForestEthics, along with a cabal of environmental
groups and complicit forest companies, assumed ownership of a vast tract of our
Canadian forest last year. They claim this is twice the size of Germany.
ForestEthics has now turned to fighting the oil sands and has enlisted many
companies to their cause as identified on their website. In addition to
Chiquita, Canadians should be very wary of supporting; Walgreens, Whole Foods,
Trader Joe's, Quiksilver, Gap Inc., Levi Strauss & Co., Timberland, Bed Bath &
Beyond, FedEx, Avon, American Eagle Outfitters, LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics,
Liz Claiborne Inc., and the City of Bellingham. ForestEthics is currently
campaigning to enlist Walmart and Safeway.
It’s time to get serious about allegedly charitable organizations like
ForestEthics. They make a good,, tax-payer supported, living by protesting any
and all activities we undertake including development of the oilsands. We need
to ensure we have the energy resources needed to maintain the planet as a viable
home for humanity. Let companies that support ForestEthics and its ilk know
where you stand any way you can. One way is to avoid their products and
services.
Yours truly,
Duane Pendergast
